SUMMARY:The 5th APSN International Conference: Global Privacy Standards: Evolution\, divergence and surveillance
DESCRIPTION:The Asian Privacy Scholars Network 5th International Conference – Global Privacy Standards: Evolution\, Divergence and Surveillance will be held in Auckland\, New Zealand. \nOver two days local and international privacy experts will gather to study developments in data privacy in the greater Asian region. The conference is open to any privacy scholars and professionals who wish to attend and/or present papers on topics of relevance. Please note that APSN members will have priority for speaking slots and registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year’s theme focuses on the challenges businesses face in addressing consumers’ fears and expectations in an era of pervasive surveillance against the backdrop of attempts to develop standards that allow the free flow of personal data. \nPersonal data is the new oil and is an increasingly important asset for business and vital for governments to function and maintain the security of their citizens. Despite the lack of global standards\, especially between the European Union and the United States\, countries in Asia have forged their own standards. This has potentially led to difficulties such as the right to be forgotten being implemented by global companies in one region but not in others. \nPapers are welcome on topics that include but are not limited to the conference theme and addressing the latest developments in privacy laws in the region\, the continued suitability of the notice and choice model and the implications of the new European Regulation and successor to Safe Harbor for the Asian region. \nThis year’s external advisory team is: \n\nProfessor Graham Greenleaf\, UNSW\, Sydney\nProfessor Anne Cheung\, University of Hong Kong\nProfessor Andrew Adams\, Meiji University\, Tokyo\nProfessor Kiyoshi Murata\, Meiji University\, Tokyo\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you in Auckland! \nGehan Gunasekara\, Alan Toy\, Blair Stewart and Katrine Evans\nThe University of Auckland Asian Privacy Scholars Network 5th International Conference Programme Committee \nPresentations

SUMMARY:The 4th APSN International Conference: Easy Privacy
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned security expert Bruce Schneier says that security is a process\, not a product. Similar sentiments can be found in the field of privacy\, embedded in the guides to compliance with privacy and data protection such as the concept of Privacy by Design. The revelations of the activities of the US’ NSA and the UK’s GCHQ has\, amongst many other consequences\, prompted greater interest in issues of privacy and surveillance amongst the mass of the population in many countries. This leads to further questions about how laws\, technologies and social norms (and their intersections) can be influenced to make it easy for individuals to have privacy. How can we know who can be trusted? Whom are we obliged to trust? How can non-computer experts secure the contents and description (meta-data) of their communications from unwanted exploitation\, and how can a balance be struck between providing individual security and privacy while allowing legitimate investigation of wrongdoing? How can users be empowered to limit the collection\, retention and processing of their individual data without it being a full-time job to read privacy policies\, track transfers of personal data and send cease-and-desist letters to direct marketers? \nIn addition to papers targetting the conference theme\, papers on the legal\, technology and social aspects of privacy and data protection in the Asia-Pacific region (or globally with applicability to this region) are also welcome. \nPresentations

SUMMARY:The 3rd APSN International Conference: Privacy Protection in Ubiquitous Network Societies in Asia
DESCRIPTION:The Law and Technology Centre of the Faculty of Law\, The University of Hong Kong\, has the pleasure to host the 3rd Asian Privacy Scholars Network Conference. \nThe 2-Day Conference will be a gathering of local and international experts of privacy to study the areas of personal data protection in Asia. The theme of this year focuses on challenges and reforms of privacy regimes in Asia in an emerging ubiquitous network society where information is provided to individuals regardless of their location. With the rapid development of Internet and Communication Technologies in recent years\, especially that of broadband and mobile Internet\, Asian countries have faced and experienced a world of “ever present” communications enabled by interconnected devices. The ubiquitous networking has given rise to an array of unprecedented problems for privacy protection\, such as social media surveillance\, location privacy\, cloud computing and personal data mining. The conference will discuss how Asian countries address these problems through legal and regulatory reform. It will also discuss other issues on surveillance and privacy to the common concerns of the participators. A special panel to discuss the latest legal challenges to personal data protection in Greater China will be held in Day 1. \nWe look forward to welcoming you in Hong Kong. \nProfessor Anne S.Y.
