SUMMARY:The 8th Asian Privacy Scholars Network Conference: Privacy\, Confidence & Data Protection in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:The 8th Asian Privacy Scholars Network (APSN) Conference will be held from Thursday\, 5 December to Friday\, 6 December\, 2019 at the Faculty of Law\, National University of Singapore. \nTheme of Conference \nThe theme of the 8th APSN Conference is “Privacy\, Confidence & Data Protection in the 21st Century”. This theme encourages the submission of papers covering contemporary issues relating to invasion of privacy\, the breach of confidence action and data protection legislation. It welcomes a wide range of submissions for the parallel sessions\, from theoretical papers that interrogate conceptual frameworks to practical analyses of personal data protection legislation such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and comparable national regulatory regimes. Papers from non-legal scholars are welcomed. \nConference Dates\, Venue and Fees \n\n\n\nDates\n:\n5 and 6 December 2019 (Thursday & Friday)\n\n\nVenue\n:\nFaculty of Law\, National University of Singapore (NUS Law)\,\nBukit Timah Campus*\n(located next to the Singapore Botanic Gardens\, a UNESCO World Heritage Site)\n\n\nParticipants\n:\n100 (maximum)\n\n\nFees\n:\nS$100 per participant\n(all conference meals will be covered by NUS Law)\n\n\nConvenor\n:\nProfessor David Tan\, NUS Law\n\n\n\n* Plenary sessions will be held in the auditorium\, and breakout panel sessions will be held in seminar rooms each equipped with powerpoint projection facilities. \nCall for Papers \nParticipants are requested to submit their paper proposal to apsn2019@nus.edu.sg by 30 August 2019. \nThe proposal should include: (i) Title; (ii) Abstract (up to 200 words); (iii) Biography of Presenter (up to 200 words); (iv) whether you would like your paper to be considered for publication in a special edition of the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies. \nHosting Institution – NUS Law \nEstablished sixty years ago\, the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law (NUS Law) is widely regarded as Asia’s leading law school. It has been consistently ranked by Quacquarelli Symonds amongst the top 20 law schools in the world (#13 in 2019\, #15 in 2017 and 2018) and was ranked #21 for law in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. \nFounded in 1956 as the Law Department of the University of Malaya in Singapore\, the faculty accepted its first undergraduate cohort in 1957 — including Ambassador-at-large Professor Tommy Koh\, Singapore’s former Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong and Emeritus Professor Koh Kheng Lian – who went on to play important roles in shaping Singapore’s laws and legal practices. Over six decades\, NUS Law has made a tremendous impact on the study and the practice of law in Singapore. \nDespite its humble beginnings\, the faculty’s student population has expanded from its pioneer batch of 22 students to an intake of 250 undergraduate students and 120 graduate students per year today. These students are taught by around over 70 full-time faculty members and over three dozen adjunct and visiting professors representing most of the major jurisdictions around the world. \nTo date\, NUS Law has produced more than 10\,000 law graduates\, who have gone on to occupy the senior ranks of the judiciary\, government\, private practice\, business\, the arts and media communities as well as almost every niche of professional life in Singapore. Prominent NUS Law alumni include Singapore’s first female President Madam Halimah Yacob ’78\, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law K.
